Toshack Service has been installing and servicing boilers for homeowners and businesses since the 1930s! Boilers are a core part of the Toshack team’s expertise; it’s where plumbing and gas technology intersect and the Toshack team is loaded with experience (and licenses) in both those areas!
Boilers efficiently push warm water or steam through a radiant heating system (in-floor heating or radiators) and they can also be paired with a coil and air handling system to provide auxiliary air heating in some situations. Originally most boilers were coal-fired; now the go-to fuel is natural gas (and its by-product propane is used in rural areas.) Electric boilers are also available but are far less efficient.
Modern boiler systems are highly energy efficient, with up to 95% AFE ratings! Electronically controlled boiler firing modulates the heat to a much finer degree than previous generations, and in larger applications twinned boilers are electronically controlled to level their run times and optimize fuel consumption. Many boilers are paired with a zone control system which provides greater control over where the heat is distributed, thus reducing fuel consumption while optimizing the comfort level of your home or building.
A great advantage of radiant heat is that it creates a warm, cozy feeling in your living space. It is a more constant heat source than a forced air system. The theory behind it is that it heats your body and the other objects in a room, not the air itself. The warmth stays down around the floor where it is needed the most, while warm air from a furnace would rise to the ceiling. Since radiant heat doesn’t heat the air itself, it doesn’t reduce the humidity levels in your home either. Radiant heating is quiet, clean, and comfortable! Radiant heating for homes is typically provided via in-floor systems, radiators, or a combination of both.
In-floor heating systems generally use a boiler to heat water (or a water-glycol mixture) which is circulated through pipes that are placed in the floor. Often the pipes are in a cement slab, or they are sandwiched between layers of your flooring. A big advantage of this type of system is that the heat is constant and evenly distributed. You won’t have to worry about blocking heat registers or keeping doors open to circulate heat. Also, there is no circulation of dust, allergens, or odours through your home, and no filters or air duct systems to clean out. In-floor systems can also be extended to your garage and driveway, to keep your vehicle warm and your driveway snow-free!
We provide boiler service and repair, on-going maintenance plans, and new installations if required!
