Ductless air conditioners (and heat pumps) are also referred to as Mini-Split systems. Unlike traditional air conditioning units that use a heat exchanger coil inside a home’s existing forced air duct system, ductless systems have a smaller heat exchanger that is located inside a fan unit that is placed on a wall inside your home; this inside unit is called the “head”. Single head units are used to cool individual rooms, while multi-head units can manage temperatures through-out your home.
Ductless systems still have an outdoor condenser like a traditional AC unit but they are independent of any existing duct system inside the house. Also, the footprint of the outdoor ductless unit is often smaller than a traditional AC unit.
Modern ductless units are whisper quiet, and very efficient. They typically have SEER ratings that are higher than most traditional AC units (up to 38 SEER!), and the cold-climate versions of ductless heat pumps can even operate as low as -30 degrees Celsius!
The perfect air conditioning solution for homes that do not have a forced air duct system, like homes with no basement, or homes built with electric baseboard heating systems. You can have a cool home without the big expense of adding a duct system.
Ductless systems are also great for additions or rooms that do not have good air exchange with the rest of your home; a ductless unit might be the perfect solution for a sunroom, or the master bedroom at the far end of the house!
Multi-head systems also give you zone control, as each indoor head is independent of the others, allowing you to modulate the cooling in specific areas of your home.
Ductless systems are often a very cost-effective way to cool your home. They are many, many times more efficient than “window shakers”! They are also very efficient when compared to conventional AC systems, and are especially cost-effective when installed in the heat pump version.
